Open Question: Are there ways to detect if someone is hacking my computer?

I was away from home on an urgent matter which took longer than expected. I just returned a couple hours ago, and I’m finding certain “changes” on my home pc. I also noticed my Anti-Spyware is “gone”! And I was unable to access my AVG!

I have a brother who has a bad reputation for messing with people’s computers in the past, and while I was away, we had a “run-in” over the phone. Sadly, I wouldn’t put it past him to have done something to my pc =(

I’m running some scans right now, but I’m just wondering…
What are some of the ways I can find out if he’s “hacking” my pc from his home? For instance, the Remote Assistance thing… Can that be accessed somehow without me knowing it? Or is that something that is only accessed at the time you are going to connect? In other words, does it have any type of “auto” functions?
Is there anything else that might help me? Are there other ways to “detect” if there were changes made while I was gone?

I know it might sound dumbish to ask these things… but I just started a business and all my work is on this pc, and earlier the Windows Security window popped up telling me I had 10 viruses and that my system was about to “crash”! I couldn’t even access my virus protection in time… I had to call my ISP and they walked me thru some steps that helped me change my proxy settings back to normal, and that’s the only way I was able to reconnect to the web and download protection all over again.
Please help me with any suggestions that might calm me down? Because I am almost freaking out right now =(

Thanks all~
