Open Question: Math Help! Relationship between 2 numbers?

Hey guys, I need help with two of my homework questions.

Question info:

About a half a lifetime ago I lived in a small town in Central California with my then husband who was a lawyer. This was before the days of cell phones which allow you to pick pretty much any phone number you want and so all the phone numbers in town had the same prefix, that is, the first three numbers (826-). Around town if you asked someone their phone number they’d just tell you the last four numbers.

The phone number for my husbands law office was 826-0611. After he’d been in business for a few months he decided to get a fax machine with its own phone number, which was assigned by the phone company. When I asked the receptionist what our new phone number for the fax machine was, she answered “9388″.

“Really?” I exclaimed, “Did you do that on purpose?” The office staff looked at me like I was crazy and I had to explain why I thought 9388 was interesting.

Question: What was it that caught my attention about the new fax number? (Hint: look at it in relation to the regular office number)

Question 2: Now think about this one – our home phone was 4589 and the office phone was 0611. Assuming that all other phone numbers were available, what were the chances that we’d get 9388 for the fax number?

Thanks in advance!
