Open Question: What did Fran on "The Nanny" actually do?

I mean Niles, the butler, did all the cooking and cleaning. Fran I suppose was like a live-in babysitter, but Maggie was 14 in the 1st season, she could just watch her bro and sis if Mr. Scheffield wasn’t home, or even Niles could. Still, Mr. Scheffield seemed to be running alot of business at home, and anytime he went to an event, Fran went too and didn’t stay home with the kids. She barely watched those kids, and they had so many activities going on that they didn’t even need a Nanny since they weren’t home much. Fran pretty much sat around eating their food or out on some adventure unrelated to the kids. What did they need her for? (well besides as the main character of the show and eye-candy for Mr. Scheffield)
